Introduction: I wrote the novel Aksinya: Enchantment and the Daemon. This was my 21st novel and through this blog, I gave you the entire novel in installments that included commentary on the writing. In the commentary, in addition to other general information on writing, I explained, how the novel was constructed, the metaphors and symbols in it, the writing techniques and tricks I used, and the way I built the scenes. I'm using this novel as an example of how I produce, market, and eventually (we hope) get a novel published. I'll keep you informed along the way.

The four plus one basic rules I employ when writing:

1. Don't confuse your readers.

2. Entertain your readers.

3. Ground your readers in the writing.

4. Don't show (or tell) everything.

     4a. Show what can be seen, heard, felt, smelled, and tasted on the stage of the novel.

5. Immerse yourself in the world of your writing.

All novels have five discrete parts:

1.  The initial scene (the beginning)

2.  The rising action

3.  The climax

4.  The falling action

5.  The dénouement

The theme statement of my 26th novel, working title, Shape, is this: Mrs. Lyons captures a shape-shifting girl in her pantry and rehabilitates her.

The most important scene in any novel is the initial scene, but eventually, you have to move to the rising action.  I’m editing many of my novels using comments from my primary reader.  I’m on Children of Light and Darkness at the moment.

I'm an advocate of using the/a scene input/output method to drive the rising action--in fact, to write any novel. 

Scene development:

1.  Scene input (easy)

2.  Scene output (a little harder)

3.  Scene setting (basic stuff)

4.  Creativity (creative elements of the scene)

5.  Tension (development of creative elements to build excitement)

6.  Release (climax of creative elements)

I can immediately discern three ways to invoke creativity:

1.  Historical extrapolation

2.  Technological extrapolation

3.  Intellectual extrapolation

Creativity is like an extrapolation of what has been.  It is a reflection of something new created with ties to the history, science, and logic (the intellect).  Creativity requires consuming, thinking, and producing. 

One of my blog readers posed these questions.  I'll use the next few weeks to answer them.

1.  Conflict/tension between characters

2.  Character presentation (appearance, speech, behavior, gestures, actions)

3.  Change, complexity of relationship, and relation to issues/theme

16.  Distinct manner of writing or speaking you employ, and why (like Pinter's style includes gaps, silences, non-sequitors, and fragments while Chekhov's includes 'apparent' inconclusiveness).

Moving on to 15. 15.  Style

Woah—style is huge.  I just spent more than six months defining style from almost every angle I could imagine. Here are the elements I found for an author’s style.

1.  Novel based style

When I write about scenes, I mean, a sequence of continuous action in a novel.  This is the smallest element of a novel. 

 

My method for scene development will accommodate the focus and style of any author, but it is a method.  Here is my method for scene development.

Scene development:

1.  Scene input (easy)

2.  Scene output (a little harder)

3.  Scene setting (basic stuff)

4.  Creativity (creative elements of the scene)

5.  Tension (development of creative elements to build excitement)

6.  Release (climax of creative elements)

 

I call this a method for writing a scene.  I don’t mean that this is specifically a formula, but if you look at any well-constructed scene, you will see the author consciously or unconsciously used this method.  I’m sure there are other approaches, but I’m not sure why you would want to use another approach.

 

First step, determine the scene input.  This is a function of style only in the subject, theme, plot, or storyline is a function of style.  Every scene has to have an input.  The input for the initial scene in a novel comes from whatever events went before.  Those events are either eluded to in later scenes or become evident in the context of other scenes (or the initial scene).  For example, the input for the initial scene for Essie is that Mrs. Lyons is sleeping and is awoken by noises from her kitchen.  Essie (the Aos Si) is in Mrs. Lyons’ kitchen.  Further input to the scene is that Essie escaped from her imprisonment by the Morfans and has been raiding the pantries of the people of Lyonshalle.  That is the basic input to the initial scene.  The reader doesn’t know any of this—this is later revealed in the novel.  The input to the initial scene is the most difficult and the most important input to a scene.  Further inputs are normally automatic (they are the output from the scene). 

 

The author determines the input for the initial scene by evaluating the theme, plot, and storylines of the novel.  I guess I’ll cover this again.  Take the theme statement from Essie.  It’s listed at the top of this blog entry.

The theme statement of my 26th novel, working title, Shape, is this: Mrs. Lyons captures a shape-shifting girl in her pantry and rehabilitates her.

This is the theme statement.  The characters are already developed.  The protagonist is Essie and the protagonist’s helper is Mrs. Lyons.  The perfect initial scene is the initial meeting of the protagonist and the antagonist or the protagonist’s helper.  In this novel, the meeting of the antagonist (Ceridwen) with the protagonist is part of the climax.  Therefore, the best initial scene (and initial scene input) is the meeting of the protagonist (Essie) and the protagonist’s helper (Mrs. Lyons).  The style portion in this is that this is the type of novel I write.  My historical fiction novels are generally historically accurate with a touch of the strange or the fantastic.  In this case, Essie is the fantastic element (as well as Ceridwen).  I’ll get deeper into this.
